Herbicide-Resistance in Turf Systems: Insights and Options for Managing Complexity

نویسندگان

چکیده

Due to complex interactions between social and ecological systems, herbicide resistance has classic features of a “wicked problem”. Herbicide-resistant (HR) Poa annua poses risk sustainably managing U.S. turfgrass but there is scant knowledge guide its management. Six focus groups were conducted throughout the United States gain understanding socio-economic barriers adopting herbicide-resistance management practices. Professionals from major sectors (golf courses, sports fields, lawn care, seed/sod production) recruited as focus-group participants. Discussions emphasized challenges weed systems compared agronomic crops. This included greater time constraints for weeds more limited chemical control options. Lack about proper use compounds with different modes action was identified threat sustainable There significant regional differences in perceptions existence, geographic scope, causes HR annua. Effective will require tailoring non-chemical practices specific conditions regions. Some participants thought it would be helpful have multi-year programs that are both sector- species-specific.

Managing Herbicide Resistance: The Role of Extension

The rapid evolution of herbicide resistance poses a significant threat for conventional agricultural practices. In practice, herbicide resistance seems to be a very complicated problem to deal with. Extension can play a significant role in managing herbicide resistance educating farmers on the main advantages and disadvantages of the available methods aiming to control and minimize herbicide re...

Managing the evolution of herbicide resistance

BACKGROUND Understanding and managing the evolutionary responses of pests and pathogens to control efforts is essential to human health and survival. Herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds undermine agricultural sustainability, productivity and profitability, yet the epidemiology of resistance evolution - particularly at landscape scales - is poorly understood. We studied glyphosate resistance in a maj...

Identifying and Managing White Grubs in Turf

White grubs are the larval stage of several scarab beetle species that feed on grass roots causing wide variation in damage. Last fall, we saw an abundance of white grub damage around Vermont, so it is likely, that we will see more damage this spring and summer. However, grub damage can vary significantly from year to year and we know that turf that receives adequate water and has a healthy roo...

Managing interoperability and complexity in health systems.

In recent years, we have witnessed substantial progress in the use of clinical informatics systems to support clinicians during episodes of care, manage specialised domain knowledge, perform complex clinical data analysis and improve the management of health organisations' resources. However, the vision of fully integrated health information eco-systems, which provide relevant information and u...

A Guide to Fungicide Resistance in Turf Systems - FSA6146

Fungicides are applied to turf to prevent the growth or penetration of disease-causing fungal organisms. Fungal organisms cause more diseases on turf than other microorganisms (Wong, 2006). Fungicides are the class of pesticides used to control fungal organisms, and they can be catego rized into many different groups based on their biochemical mode of action (MOA) and chemical structure. Addit...
